On Valentine’s Day, Take Time to Love Yourself

on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 15:48

“Don’t forget to love yourself.” This advice comes from the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. It sounds so simple, but, in reality, loving yourself is not always easy.

As women, we may have an especially difficult time finding things to love in ourselves. We are inundated with messages in popular media telling us what needs fixing—our wrinkles, our weight, our cooking, decorating, and fashion sense. We are told how to be better friends, spouses, and supportive caregivers to our parents and children.

In Memory of Women Taken Too Soon

on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 21:47

“Oakville isn’t a town that sees a lot of violence.” This quote appeared in the Toronto Star on January 12, the day Katherine Newman was found murdered. Her estranged husband was killed by police the same day, after appearing at a police station, allegedly brandishing a knife. The most recent news report in the Hamilton Spectator indicates that police “have yet to formally connect the two deaths...[but] are not seeking any other suspects in the woman’s death.”

The story of Ms. Newman’s death was reported in media outlets across the GTA and southern Ontario, and as far away as Vancouver.
