Monthly giving campaign launched to help agency manage increasing demand for services.

Oakville, ON (CANADA) – December 5, 2011. The Women’s Centre of Halton announces the “Angel of Hope” giving campaign. Through this campaign, donors can become an “Angel of Hope” for the Women’s Centre, with a suggested monthly donation of $10 or a one time annual gift. Halton Regional Chair, Gary Carr and MPP, Kevin Flynn launched the campaign on December 1, becoming the first two donors to the “Angel of Hope”.  Kevin Flynn has put out a challenge to others to join him.

“The Angel of Hope campaign is an important part of our fundraising plans, but it is also intended to raise awareness of the many ways the Women’s Centre supports women in our community,” said Executive Director Melvina Walter.  “With limited government funding, we need community support through this campaign to allow us to continue to operate the Women’s Centre programs and services whichprovide hope for women in crisis, distress, or transition.”

With the significant population growth in Halton and growing unemployment, The Women’s Centre has seen an increase in demand for our services over the past several years.  We serve the most vulnerable population in our community, helping many women who may otherwise fall through the cracks.  The Women’s Centre is unique, often the first point of entry for women in crisis as they are able to access immediate, free support.

The Centre relies on donations to supplement the funding it receives from the United Way Oakville and Ontario Women’s Directorate.  The “Angel of Hope” campaign will provide an ongoing revenue stream to help us continue to provide support for women in the Halton community.

Founded in 1989, the Women’s Centre is not a shelter although its original mandate was to support abused women leaving a shelter. Over the past 22 years, its core service is still supportive counselling, available in six different languages, but the Centre offers other programs that support, educate and empower women, including: abuse support, employment and job search training, separation and divorce groups, legal and tax assistance, the New Start program for Entrepreneurial Women, self-esteem coaching, and workshops that focus onlife skills and personal growth.
