On Valentine’s Day, Take Time to Love Yourself

on Fri, 02/10/2012 - 15:48

“Don’t forget to love yourself.” This advice comes from the Danish philosopher Soren Kierkegaard. It sounds so simple, but, in reality, loving yourself is not always easy.

As women, we may have an especially difficult time finding things to love in ourselves. We are inundated with messages in popular media telling us what needs fixing—our wrinkles, our weight, our cooking, decorating, and fashion sense. We are told how to be better friends, spouses, and supportive caregivers to our parents and children.

What a wonderful time we all had at the Light Up Her Life fundraiser for The Women's Centre! The event was held on Saturday February 4, 2012 at the Bronte Legion and raised $6,601 for the Centre.

Thank you to everyone who attended to support the Center.

Say Yes to Me!

We are pleased to share this guest post from Patti Wilson. Patti is presenting a workshop called Come Home to Yourself on January 28, 2012 from 10AM to noon at the Centre.

We women want to do it all, be it all and have it all!  And well we should!  Yet all too often, in the process of “doing” and “having,” we begin to lose the most essential thing of all—our selves.  A friend of mine recently reminded me that we are human beings, not human doings, and that, to be truly effective in all that we do, our lives must remain grounded in the experience of the here and now.

As women, we often

In Memory of Women Taken Too Soon

on Tue, 01/17/2012 - 21:47

“Oakville isn’t a town that sees a lot of violence.” This quote appeared in the Toronto Star on January 12, the day Katherine Newman was found murdered. Her estranged husband was killed by police the same day, after appearing at a police station, allegedly brandishing a knife. The most recent news report in the Hamilton Spectator indicates that police “have yet to formally connect the two deaths...[but] are not seeking any other suspects in the woman’s death.”

The story of Ms. Newman’s death was reported in media outlets across the GTA and southern Ontario, and as far away as Vancouver.

Out of the Darkness and Into the Light: Tracy’s Story

on Mon, 12/12/2011 - 14:14

Today we introduce  Out of the Darkness and Into the Light, a regular feature on our blog. Each month, we will share a story from a woman who has come to the Centre in a state of crisis or distress and found the support she needs to move her life forward. We start with Tracy's story.

"I died at fourteen," says Tracy. That was the age she met her future husband and became entangled in a web of abuse at his hands and the hands of his father.

Soon after she started dating her boyfriend, she was sexually molested by his father. She also witnessed this man molest his own daughter.

She was just

on Sat, 11/19/2011 - 20:34

Maxine is a former client of The Women’s Centre who, with supportive counselling and meditation, recovered from a complete breakdown and brought her life back into balance.

The first signs that things were starting to come apart in Maxine’s life emerged about five years ago. She was married, had two children, a big home, and a job with Bell Canada working with Fortune 500 clients.

She was let go from her job and underwent a very stressful journey to find a new job. She decided to take the Canadian Securities course to become an investment executive.
