In the wake of the terrible stories of gang rapes on teenage girls in recent weeks, Women's Centre volunteer Crystal Smith discusses the importance of teaching boys about consent and boundaries.

Jane Doe in Steubenville, Ohio. Rehtaeh Parsons in Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia. My heart goes out to these young women—one who is scarred for life and the other who decided that her wounds cut too deep and the pain could no longer be endured.

Raped, then publicly humiliated, verbally abused, laughed at, and blamed for the crimes of others.

IWD 2013: Engaging Men and Boys to Stop Violence Against Women

on Thu, 03/07/2013 - 16:20

Last year on International Women’s Day (IWD), we responded to a question from Gender Across Borders and CARE about involving, educating, and inspiring girls in a positive way. This year, we turn our attention to boys as we share some thoughts on the 2013 theme from Status of Women Canada: engaging  men to end violence against women.

Certainly, there is more attention being paid today than ever before to the role that men can play in ending violence against women (VAW). The White Ribbon Campaign, started in Canada in response to the Montréal Massacre, now has a global presence with campaigns

Happy Holidays and All the Best in 2013!

on Wed, 12/19/2012 - 13:03

As 2012 draws to a close, we would like to take a moment to reflect on another wonderful year at The Women’s Centre.

Despite funding challenges, our doors remained open for women in need in this community. We continued to provide a safe space for women who were seeking advice, guidance, or the community of other women.

Beyond core services like supportive counselling and support groups, we offered many popular and engaging workshops, like Winning with Money, Healthy Relationships, Uncovering Your Truth, and Building Blocks for Self-Esteem, among many others.

This is the story of a woman

A wife and a mother

Ordinary and  unique

Living life in a cage

Getting up with sunrise

Breakfast, toast and eggs

Lunches for her  boys

At home with the toys

To school they go

Not yet snow.

Leaves everywhere, the late fall,

Permission denied for the mall

His car still in the driveway

Why again today

His anger scares me

and there he is

enraged and unease

Where were you, he screams

The boys to school, I squirm

Words for talking

his fist communicates

A typical day, my life astray.

Once we were happy

Now he is snappy

Loneliness and isolation

Empowerment Through the Eyes of an Eight Year Old by Ravi Hundal

on Mon, 11/26/2012 - 00:16

If I had $1000 and I had to give it to a charity. I would choose the Women's Centre because my family believes in this centre. I went to this charity function and the tickets went to the centre for better support. When I went out of that function, I was not the same.

Let me tell you about the Women’s Centre. The Women Centre’s is where women that have been treated with no respect go talk to other people (women) about what happened to them. My mom volunteers at the Women Centre too! I hope this charity will help women that need it.

Ravi Hundal is in grade four.

“When you learn to trust yourself you’ll learn to live.” Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe

I heard this quote from a friend….many times. I didn’t understand it at the time. I was in too much pain and felt too lost. But she kept saying this quote to me again and again and again until I finally started reflecting on its meaning.

When you learn to trust yourself….I had never trusted myself. I looked to others to give me the answers and the help I desperately needed. I wanted someone…anyone who could somehow magically fix my life and pull me out of the darkness I had slipped into.
