Programs and Services

The Women’s Centre is home to many supportive and empowering programs and services for women including:.

Peer Counselling

Are you going through a difficult time?

Need to talk? Peer counsellors provide one-on-one support for women facing abuse, grief/loss and relationship issues. Peer counselling is available during the Centre’s regular hours (link to About Us page) of operation. No appointment is necessary. All counsellors are trained to listen, support and offer referrals to appropriate services in the community. 

No Cost. CONFIDENTIALITY IS ASSURED.

Counselling is offered through:

  • One-on-one sessions
  • Telephone sessions
  • Drop-in service

Caring Across Cultures

Caring Across Cultures is our new counselling service for immigrant women. For more information about the program, view the press release or program flyer. If you are interested in volunteering, please download the volunteer application and follow the instructions on the form to submit it.

Support Groups

Support groups meet at a regularly scheduled time. They provide a comfortable, safe space for discussing a wide range of issues. Current support groups offered at The Halton Women’s Centre:

Abuse Support Group
A confidential group for women who have experienced any form of abuse.

Separation/Divorce Group
Are you going through the painful experience of separation or divorce? You are not alone. Share your concerns and receive support.

Caring & Sharing Circle
Share your challenges, life experience, and wisdom.

Women of Wisdom (W.O.W.) Over 50?
Join this informal support group for guest speakers, group discussions and special events. Click here to download the 2009-2010 Women of Wisdom brochure.

Social Group for Spanish Speaking Women
A gathering of Spanish speaking women with an objective of helping women meet new friends who speak their language.
Grief Clinic (In Spanish)
Recognize the different symptoms of grief/bereavement, and find relief through releasing the emotions that cause suffering.
Osteoporosis Support Group
The Osteoporosis Support Group, which comes under the umbrella of the Halton Women’s Centre, offers education and support to women who are living with osteoporosis. The support group holds educational events, displays at health fairs, fundraising activities, and provides a lending library. For information on monthly meetings, see Oakville Osteoporosis Group. The meetings feature a guest speaker or a discussion about osteoporosis and other health issues followed by social time. There is no membership fee to belong to the group.

Services

  • The Legal Clinic is available on the first Monday of each month from September to June, from 6:30 to 8:30 in the evening. A Family Law lawyer is available for half-hour, private sessions to discuss issues surrounding divorce, separation, child custody and child support. No appointments. Call for information.
  • The Employment Network assists those who are unemployed with resume writing, job searches, networking and interviewing skills. The program runs Tuesdays from 10:00 am – 12:00 pm, from September to November and from January to March. 
  • Income Tax Assistance runs from February to April to help you prepare your tax return. Call the Centre for financial eligibility.

* Please Note: If you wish to attend a course or workshop, you must register in advance. Workshops do not run unless there are a minimum of four participants, and pre-registration enables us to obtain contact information so we can alert you in case of any change in the program. Cancellations will also be posted on the door of the Women's Centre.*
